On November 6th Triumph played host to a local Umpire's Seminar. the day saw a devoted group of students and instructors from red belt through to sixth degree Black Belts! Many of our students got their Class C or Class B certification to corner judge, pattern judge and our senior instructors certified to be a center Umpire. It was a great day. Keep your ears open for the next local seminar. It makes you better as a judge and a competitor!
congratulations to the following Triumph Members for their successful
certification!
A HUGE thank you to all those that came to visit us for our 6th Annual Open House1 It was a great success! As always there was the bouncy castle, Try Taekwon-Do classes and great Demos! thank you again for making our birthday such a hit!
Thanks to all those who Volunteers and all the generous hearts that made donations tot he food Bank! We are very proud of our Students and Parents! Check out our Photo Gallery for more!!! This year a group of 8 competitors and Mr. Thompson headed for a long car ride. Prince George's Freedom Taekwon-Do hosted the Northern BC Championships on June 4th, 2011. It was a small but fearless group that braved the long winding roads and hours of playing 'I spy' to get out on the floor and show everyone what Triumph members are made of. well really the car ride, while long, consisted of good music and movies playing on the lap tops. We were there before we knew it! There were 220+ competitors but our Triumph Members didn't give an inch. Our eight althetes brought home 16 medals including a double gold effort by our very own Mr. Reinelt! Watch and learn students, he still has what it takes to win gold. Check out our gallery for photos! The group got together at the lone 'Vancouver' Pizza in Prince George to share stories of forgotten patterns, bloodied noses and bumps and bruises. We watched the Canucks win Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals in overtime and it was a perfect ending to a great day. Check our the medal results.
The 2011 Provincial Championships were hosted in Kamloops on April 9th. Triumph brought half the tournament! Well, not really but it felt like. We had a contingent of 52 competitors hit the road and gear up at the tournament. Check out the gallery for photos and see the listed results below. It was an amazing showing and we are very proud of each and every students for doing their very best.
Thank you to all those that braved the weather and joined us as we parades through the streets of Port Coquitlam. It was a rainy morning but that didn't stop our students from showing their stuff. we even had a few eager Tiny Tigers join us for the fun! We had exciting demos from our Black Belt club ranging from self defence skits and pre-arranged fights to specialty and power board breaking. Everyone showed their school pride and represented Triumph very well. Pat yourselves on the back and lets bring an even bigger group next year!
This year’s Christmas Social was
a blast! Our guests enjoyed making Candy Cane Reindeer, festive
Christmas cards and getting involved in a ton of games. The snacks and
treats were delicious, putting everyone in the holiday spirit.
Games like ring toss, fishing and the rope swing were popular and everyone tried their hand at guessing just how any candies were in the jars. The closest lucky guessers took home the jars full of candy. We would like to thank everyone who came and those who helped out for making this year’s Christmas social another amazingly successful event. We raised $60 and 70lbs of food for the food bank. Thank you to those who donated!
November 12 and 13, 2010 saw 380 competitors from all across Canada descend on Richmond, B.C. to participate in the 2010 CTFI National Championships. The event was held in one small (20,000 square feet) corner of the amazing Richmond Olympic Oval – the home of the long track speed skating races during the 2010 Olympics last spring. Friday November 12 saw the hard working volunteers from the Host Club, Triumph Taekwon-Do, setting up the competition area at 6am!
Local TV Station CITY-TV sent their morning show host to the venue to catch some of the action in the morning. He was treated to demonstrations by the Junior Pre-arranged Sparring Team and the Womens Patterns Team. Check out this web link for TV Show… http://video.citytv.com/video/detail/673489635001.000000/taekwondo--greg-attempts-board-breaking/ On Friday, 130 Black Belts battled for top honours in Junior, Senior and Super Senior divisions. For the Juniors and Seniors, this was very serious business as everyone went all out to win a spot on the National Team going to New Zealand for the World Championships in March 2011. All matches were held for Black Belt Patterns divisions, including the finals for Gold/Silver/Bronze, resulting in the selection of our champions for the National team.
Free Sparring eliminations were held as well, but round robins finals were held over until Saturday afternoon to give competitors a rest before their hardest work began.
In a first at a Canadian Nationals, Mr. Kurt Ottesen (VI), a member of the ITF Umpire Committee, brought along one of the ITF Electronic Scoring Systems which was used in the centre ring. The system worked well, kept the fans and competitors informed and really sped up the scoring for free sparring. Saturday started early with Opening Ceremonies at 8:00am sharp. Ms. Lyn Hardman, the Triumph volunteer charged with creating the Opening Ceremonies had arranged for an exciting show that started with a procession of Masters, VIPs, Senior Umpires and Black Belts following behind their Provincial flags, all marching in to the beat of AC/DCs “Back in Black”.
After the Bow-In with the Student's Oath led by Triumph students Breanna Putnam, Owen Deo and Meya Hikichi, and the singing of the National Anthem by Amanada Spinosa, everyone was mesmerized by a local Korean Drumming group. This was followed by welcoming speeches from VIPs and presentations to Instructors.
As part of the Opening Ceremonies, the Sr. Prearranged Sparring team of Mr. Chris Law (V) and Mr. Mike Blom (IV) performed their routine, followed by the 2009 World Silver Medal Champions Womens Patterns Team performing 3 patterns. The crowd was riveted at the skill exhibited by both teams. Competition for Coloured Belts got underway at 9am with 6 rings operating under the guidance of our senior umpires.
Medals for the winners were presented on a special podium off the competition floor to allow parents and supporters to get up close for a good photo opportunity (and to speed up the action on the competition floor).
The biggest group by far was our own Team Triumph with 92 competitors getting out there and doing their best. And their best was very good! Team Triumph pulled in 121 medals in 163 divisions of competition. Leading the charge by capturing double Gold for both Patterns and Free Sparring were: Patrick Rosh (Green Belt Boys) and Inaam Jina (Red Belt Boys). Other outstanding performances resulting in Gold and Silver combinations went to: Cole Kent (Red Belts), Frank Lerch (Mens Green Belts), Patrick Sere (Green Belts), Brooke Tremblay (Red Belts), Michael Chan (Blue Belts) and William Park (Green Belts). A listing of full results for Triumph Taekwon-Do students is included below.
Coloured Belt competition finished by 3:00pm. Black Belt Sparring Round Robins followed. Competition was hot with everyone going all out for a spot on the team. With 5 rings running at once, the individual sparring was finished by 5:00pm. This year saw the return of the extremely popular Team Sparring event. Senior Mens teams from BC and Saskatchewan, and Junior Mens teams from BC and Nova Scotia met on the field of battle to decide who was tops. After 4 rounds, Saskatchewan took gold in Seniors. After 5 close rounds in Juniors, Nova Scotia took top honours. As expected, this was a real crowd pleaser, having several hundred fans on their feet cheering.
The day finished with nearly 30 competitors trying their hand (and feet!) in the Power Breaking and Special Techniques events. Full results are now available on the CTFI Web site (www.ctfi.org) or via the National Championships web site (www.ctfi-nationals.com). In another first for a CTFI Nationals, nearly 300 competitors and supporters gathered for a gala awards banquet on Saturday evening. After a fine meal, Master Clint Norman (President of CTFI) and Master Scott Downey (Eastern Canada Vice President of CTFI) awarded medals to all the Black Belt winners in the various divisions. There was a lot of cheering and very many happy Black Belts receiving their awards on a podium in front of their supporters and all the other Black Belts.
The top black belt athletes from each division will be representing Canada in the Individual events at the World Championships in New Zealand this coming March 2011! After the individual awards were presented, National Coaches Mr. Phillipe Parent and Mr. Nicolas Tran announced the names of the athletes selected to participate in the team events. These include both Junior and Senior, Male and Female free sparring, power breaking and special technique breaking team events. Congratulations to everyone who attended, worked hard and we hope you had fun. But that is really only half the story! The other half of the story started nearly 2 years ago in February 2009 when a Mr. Reinelt convinced a small group of volunteer parents to take on the project of hosting the 2010 Nationals. 2 years of dedicated effort saw Triumph Taekwon-Do successfully host our largest event yet! Feedback from competitors, officials, VIPs and spectators was overwhelmingly positive. Everyone was knocked out by the amazing Richmond Olympic Oval. Travellers loved the great hotel and the short walk to the venue. We received many compliments on the smooth and detailed organization.
Special thanks go out to our organizing committee members whose
dedication and hard work over this past long time made this event the
success that it was: In addition, our umpires, competitors and VIPs were impressed at the skill and helpfulness of our well-trained volunteers. We had a corps of nearly 125 volunteers over the 2 days. These included parents and students from Triumph Taekwon-Do, as well as a large number of volunteers from the City of Richmond and the Olympic Oval. Thank you again to all of our selfless volunteers who gave some of their time to help make this event the success that it was. We couldn't have done it without you! And now, everyone can catch up on the rest of their lives again! Check our Gallery for more photos from the event! 2010 National Championships Results for Triumph Taekwon-Do
Thank you to all our volunteers for making our 5th Annual Open House such a success! As usual the Bouncy Castle was a hit and we collected both food and donations for the food bank. Our Black Belt Club and Black Belt Demo Team strutted their stuff with pre-arranged fighting routines, self defense demos, team patterns and a awesome board breaking. Thanks again to everyone involved! Keep an eye out for pictures!
Photos coming soon!
Congratulations to all of our students who have recently joined the society of ITF Black Belts. It has taken a lot of hard work and commitment to get to this point. Enjoy the feeling of success and achievement, you definitely deserve it! Remember that when you become a Black Belt, you also become a beginner again-- In the world of Black Belts that is! There is always something new and fascinating to learn, so good luck on the continuation of your journey towards your second degree!
Triumph Taekwon-do
strutted their stuff during the 2010 May Day Parade on Saturday May 8.
It was warm
Over 60 Triumph students marched through down town
Port Coquitlam carrying fun banners and signs. It was quite a sight to
see everyone dressed in full doboks, you looked sharp! We even had
several Tiny
In addition, our dedicated Black Belt Club members demoed everything from self defense skits, board breaking to step-sparring and even synchronized patterns for the parade watchers. Check out the Gallery for more photos from the event!
Red Belts and Black Belt age 16 or over, are often asked to help at all tournaments to judge patterns and free sparring for the lower ranking coloured belts. This way, events can run smoothly, judges gain some experience, and make a valuable contribution to the sport and the art. To help them be ready for that, the Canadian Taekwon-Do Federation International (CTFI) hosted an official Umpire and Officials Training Course on Sunday, May 2, 2010. Held the day after the B.C. Provincial Championships (May 1, 2010), the course was run at the Sandman Hotel in Vernon from 8:00 am – 4:00 pm. What an information packed day! The program was instructed by Mr. Kurt Ottesen, C.T.F.I. Director of Umpires. Each participant received the new C.T.F.I Official’s Training Manual and the C.T.F.I Officials Handbook. Since Triumph Taekwon-Do is hosting the Canadian National Championships this November, we will need help from all our eligible Red and Black Belts with the officiating. This course helped them to be confident and ready! If you are the eligible age and belt level, and missed out on this opportunity, keep your eyes out for then next Umpire Certification seminar coming up sometime next year. It is an extremely valuable training tool to enhance your familiarity for ITF competition rules and be a competent judge in the ring.
This year’s this Provincial tournament was hosted by Sundance TKD in beautiful Vernon, B.C. on Saturday May 1, 2010. As usual, the tournament was open to Coloured Belts including Yellow Stripes all the way up to Black Belts, ages 7 and older. Students competed in Patterns, or Sparring or both.
Tournaments are an important aspect of Taekwon-Do. They teach students Taekwon-Do protocol as well as provide an opportunity to improve their over all skills by testing them against other students of the same belt level. To get to the tournament venue, we arranged one of our famous bus rides for all of our staff and competitors. They woke up before the crack up dawn, gathering at our Dojang at 5:30 in the morning to board our chartered bus. It was the green way to go, and the fun way, too! (Even if it was super early). Students on the bus arrived in Vernon around 11am, just in time to get ready for the Opening Ceremony. Everyone did a fantastic job competing! Whether they came away with a medal or not, we all know they did their best, and that’s awesome! Congratulations to all our students!
Since black belts had to be ready to compete at 9:00am Saturday morning, they had to skip the bus ride and carpool up the night before. Many of our red and black belts stayed over night after the tournament to participate in the ITF Umpire Certification Seminar on Sunday May 2/10. So they got to party with the rest of the schools at a group dinner in Vernon. All the parents and colour belts taking the bus back home certainly didn’t miss out on any fun, though! Before leaving Vernon, the bus made a detour to a local Pizza place to pick up our mound of fresh baked pizzas for the journey home. We would like to sincerely thank all the parents and volunteers that helped out at the tournament to keep our students confident and organized. We couldn’t have done it without your help! Thank you to Mrs. Reinelt too for organizing all the food and snacks for the journey back! We hope everyone had a great experience and we look forward to having you all participate in our next tournament: the CTFI National Championships! Hosted by Triumph Taekwon-Do! If you have any photos of the tournament that you would like to share, pick the best ones and either email them to Mrs. R, or bring them in on a thumb drive so we can add them to our online gallery!
CLICK HERE to view photos of the event! Thank you to everyone that came out and joined us for an afternoon of fun, games, and socializing! We hope everyone enjoyed themselves! Congratulations to all the raffle and door prize winners, if you left before the draw, we will contact you if you won.
Also, we would like to an extend our sincerest gratitude to all the parent and student volunteers that helped set up, run, and clean up the event. We would not have been able to do it without you! Finally we wish everyone a very happy holiday season. We will be on winter break from Dec 24/09 through to January 3/09. All regular classes resume Monday Jan 4/09. Cheers!
Over 80 competitors representing Port Coquitlam’s Triumph Taekwon-Do competed at the 4th annual Lower Mainland Friendship Tournament for International Taekwon-Do Federation of British Columbia (ITF of BC) members in Vancouver on Nov. 14/09. There were more than 140 competitors from 11 different schools showing their skills in Patterns and Free Sparring events. This was the first time we’ve had so many students from Triumph Taekwon-Do participate in an event like this.
CLICK HERE to visit the photo gallery! We are very proud of every single one of our students who chose to participate and learn from this safe, fun and exciting experience. It takes a lot of courage to get up and perform your patterns and free-sparring against people you don't know (and some you do) in front of a panel of judges! Remember that it's not the medals that are important-- it's the fact that you did your best despite your nerves! Congratulations everyone on a job well done! We would also like to extend our sincerest gratitude to all of the parent and student volunteers that made this tournament such a fantastic success! Without your help we would not have been able to make this happen! Thank you for giving us time out of your Friday and Saturday to set-up, run and clean everything up afterwards.
Students, parents, family and friends, as well as guests from our community, came to help us celebrate Triumph Taekwon-Do’s 4th Annual Open House. Members of the Black Belt Club worked hard over the summer, and put on several exciting demonstrations throughout the course of the day. Guests got a chance to see everything from self-defence skits to team patterns and board breaking. As always, there was a bouncy castle to bounce around and have fun in between demonstrations. We brought back that crazy giraffe that bobbed up and down when everyone jumped. In total we consumed 230 hot dogs! In exchange we collected lots of food and $238.21 in cash to donate to the food bank. Way to go everyone and thank-you for your generosity. A great big "Thank You" goes out to all of the parents and members that volunteered throughout the day , including morning set up and afternoon clean-up! We couldn't have done it with out you!
All ITF Taekwon-do students were invited to take part in a special three day series of seminars with the President of the International Taekwon-Do Federation, Grandmaster Trân Triêu Quân, 9th Degree Black Belt. This event was a unique opportunity to share the knowledge, history and insights of ITF TaeKwon-Do with the President of the ITF; one of only a few Grandmasters in the art today! The event was held August 21st, 22nd & 23rd in beautiful Prince George, BC, and was open to students of all ages and ranks. Many training sessions were offered on all the different aspects of TaeKwon-Do, including an insightful session on the development of TaeKwon-Do and the “Do” of the martial arts. A number of our students carpooled the 12 hour road trip all the way up to Prince George, which was a blast in and of itself!
These students admitted "It was hard work and an intense work out, but totally worth it!" This year two of the days were open to colour belts. On the second day, the colour belts received an excellent chance to learn more about the intricacies of Patterns by watching the Black Belt's being critiqued by the Grand Master Himself. There were plenty of Free Sparring and Self Defence drills, too! But it wasn't all just physical activity-- Students also learned lots about ITF Taekwon-Do protocol, and even got to practice it at the Black Belt Dinner. Everyone that attended had a great time and are already raring to go for next year's seminar! Don't miss out on YOUR chance to learn directly from Grand Master Tran next year!
Many students and their families joined us for an afternoon of fun, sun (and clouds) and socializing at our first annual picnic in the park on Sunday July 12/09.
Everyone brought along some outdoor games to play, everything from soccer to badminton and tag. Some families even brought their dogs to come and join in on the fun! We're looking forward to doing this again next year, with an even bigger turn-out for even more fun!
Here Ye! Here Ye! Thank you to everyone that came out and attended the Medieval Theme Night fundraiser. As always your contributions to sending the BC Women's Black Belt Pattern Team to Nationals in Montreal, QB are greatly appreciated. Every little bit helps! Thank you! This time around we held a Grand Knight's Tournament, with competitions ranging from bean-bag archery, to pool-noodle jousting! We topped off the evening with a hot dog dinner and movie called "The Dark Crystal".
There was a call for help from a galaxy far, far away. With the galactic war against the Separatists still charging on the Jedi forces were stretched thin, too thin. There was a great need for new Jedi, and 30 brave children answered the call.
They witnessed a growing feud between two Jedi Knights, whose opinions on training differed greatly. The 30 young Padawans were divided into two teams, each team assigned to one of the two Jedi Knights. Each child crafted their very own Lightsaber, and then had to learn how to harness its power through a series of training courses and challenges. In the end, it was the Padawans’ own demonstration of teamwork and good will that reconciled the two Jedi Knights, returning peace to the Force.
This Theme Night, lead by the BC Ladies Black Belt Patterns Team was a huge success and a great help on our journey to the Nationals in April. We are sincerely thankful to everyone that joined us for this event. We hope everyone had a great time!
![]() On Saturday Oct. 18, Triumph TKD was taken over by 25 young pirates in search of fun, adventure, and most importantly, treasure!
The first ever "Theme Night" fundraiser for the B.C. Women's Black Belt Patterns Team was a great success, and it's all thanks to the awesome enthusiasm all our participants showed! Thanks goes to their parents as well, and we hope they enjoyed their night off from the kids.
Activities ranged from problem solving skills (putting together a 3-D treasure map), to team building exercises and friendly competition between teams, all with a pirate theme.
